A drivers’ helmet livery, like the heraldry of medieval Knights, is his identity. Over decades of racing, most top professional drivers have personalised and been instantly recognisable by their helmets. The best designs are the least complicated; designs that stand out from a distance.
Here are some examples of famous drivers’ helmets…

Anthony’s helmet livery was designed for him by a sponsor, Bob Moore, in 1983. Moore was one of the backers of John Kirkpatrick Racing and behind the SAAB F3 Project in 1985. Anthony has stuck with the design ever since. It is a very simple design comprising of a base colour of white with two horizontal red stripes just below the visor at the front, which sweep upwards at the back, and the area below them is dark blue. A very simple but striking and easily recognisable design. In 2018 Anthony added a ghosted chequered flag design on top of his helmet in the white area.

Anthony was born in Glasgow, where his father was an architect and his mother taught piano. He was educated at the famous Loretto School in Musselburgh, which includes the great Jim Clark amongst its former pupils. Anthony has two brothers, one is a furniture designer, and the other competes in the well known ‘Robot Wars’ TV programme.
The first vehicle Anthony drove was when he was 11-years-old, and it was a 30 tonne earth moving vehicle, a far cry from what he drives now! It was at a quarry near where his parents were living, and when he found that he could start up the earth movers, he couldn’t resist it…
In some ways racing was in Anthony's blood and it seemed natural that he should become a racing driver. A close friend of his family raced in Formula Two against Jackie Stewart, also doing a whole host of events including the London-Sydney rally, and was a real inspiration to him. With Jim Clark the most famous ‘old boy’ of his school, perhaps it was always going to happen.
Anthony's first racing car was a Formula Ford, a Nike Mk.10B that he bought in 1976, and a year later he was racing for the first time, at the famous Jim Russell Racing Drivers School where he took his first victory in their Scholarship competition.
Anthony moved south to Oxford where he lives with his wife Tina, and away from the track he enjoys both water and snow skiing, playing golf, and travelling. After his time racing there his favourite food is Japanese, though he also enjoys malt whiskey and good vintage champagne!
In 1999 Anthony became patron of the 'Racing for Children' charity.
Although best known for racing in BTCC during the 90’s for Nissan and Ford his professional career began in Sports Cars with 3rd at Le Mans in a Porsche 962. This led to 6 years of racing in Japan in Sports Cars, Touring Cars and included winning the Japanese F3 Championship against Jacques Villeneuve, Tom Kristensen and Rikard Rydell.
More recently he has been racing Touring Cars in South America for the Works Honda Petrobras Team, film work with Top Gear and is now with team mate Jordan Witt crowned 2011 British GT Champions (GTC) in a Works Chevron.
Anthony will be racing at the Goodwood Revival this weekend. He will be driving a Mini Cooper S in the St. Mary's Trophy in two races on Saturday and Sunday.
