About me I was born
in Glasgow, where my father was an architect and my taught
piano. I was educated at the famous Loretto School in
Musselburgh, which includes the great Jim Clark amongst its
former pupils. I have two brothers, one is a furniture designer,
and the other competes in the well known ‘Robot
Wars’ TV programme. The first
vehicle I drove was when I was 11-years-old, and it was a 30
tonne earth moving vehicle, a far cry from what I drive now! It
was at a quarry near where my parents were living, and when we
found that we could start up the earth movers, I couldn’t
resist it… In some
ways racing was in my blood and it seemed natural that I should
become a racing driver. A close friend of my family raced in
Formula Two against Jackie Stewart, also doing a whole host of
events including the London-Sydney rally, and was a real
inspiration to me. With Jim Clark the most famous ‘old boy’
of my school, perhaps it was always going to happen. My first
racing car was a Formula Ford, a Nike Mk.10B that I bought in
1976, and a year later I was racing for the first time, at the
famous Jim Russell Racing Drivers School where I took my first
victory in their Scholarship competition. I have now
moved south to Oxford where I live with my wife Tina, and away
from the track I enjoy both water and snow skiing, playing golf,
and travelling. After my time racing there my favourite food is
Japanese, though I also enjoy malt whiskey and good vintage
champagne! In 1999 I became patron of the 'Racing for Children' charity. |
